Market Breadth / Participation

Definition
Umbrella concept for how broadly stocks participate in a market move, synthesizing advance-decline, new highs/lows, percent-above-moving-average, and up/down volume into a read on trend health.
How to read it
Breadth asks whether a market move is broad-based or driven by a handful of names. It aggregates several component gauges: advancers/decliners, net new highs, percent of stocks above their moving averages, and up/down volume. Broad participation (most stocks advancing) confirms a durable trend; narrowing breadth (index up on fewer and fewer stocks) warns of fragility. The single most-cited use is divergence, where price and breadth disagree, with breadth often deteriorating before the cap-weighted index turns.
How practitioners use it
Used as context among multiple indicators — never as a standalone signal to act.
Less common professional uses
Breadth divergence at tops is a leading-but-slow condition: internals can weaken for months before the index tops, so a divergence is a risk flag, not a sell trigger, and premature action is the common mistake. Equal-weight vs cap-weight is the crux of modern breadth debates: a mega-cap-led index can rise on deteriorating breadth for extended periods, so 'bad breadth' is not automatically bearish when leadership is genuinely concentrated in the largest names. Volume-weighted breadth (up/down volume, McClellan Oscillator/Summation from A/D data) can confirm or contradict issue-count breadth; disagreement between them signals low-conviction moves. Composite breadth models blend components with chosen weights, so different constructions disagree at the margins; treat the methodology as part of the signal. All breadth series are EOD and universe-dependent; constituent changes, non-operating issues, and holiday sessions introduce artifacts, so prefer common-stock-only, consistently defined universes.
